Proper barn design and stall dimensions are vital for both. Farmers need to pay attention to detail when constructing or remodeling a tie-stall facility. In 2007, the USDA reported 62 of the United States dairy barns still utilized tie-stall facilities, and many need to be updated to improve cow comfort. One common thread with all of these dairy cattle housing systems is to ensure that dairy cows are comfortable and managed in an environment to improve their health and prevent diseases. Tie-stall barns were once the main type of dairy cattle housing in the United States. These facilities can include tie stalls for individual dairy cows, free stalls, dry lots, pasture systems, and more recently, compost bedded packs.
